Snoring refers to a rattling, snorting or grumbling sound that certain individuals make while asleep. While infrequent or mild snoring typically doesn't raise alarms, loud, persistent snoring can increase your risk of certain health conditions like high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack.
When a person dozes off and progresses from a light sleep to a deep sleep, the muscles in the soft palate, tongue, and throat tend to relax. The tissues in the throat can relax enough that they partially block your airway and vibrate. The narrower your airway, the more vigorous the airflow becomes. This increases vibration and causes your snoring to become louder.
Snoring is a common condition that can affect anyone, although it happens more often in men and in people who are overweight. Also, it is most often associated with a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. A person who experiences this condition may appear to stop breathing for a while as they sleep, then make choking or gasping sounds.
Causes: Besides this, snoring can be caused by a number of factors, including age, mouth anatomy, family history, smoking, alcohol consumption, nasal congestion, and sleep position (sleeping on your back).
