The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system. They are located in the lower abdomen on both sides of the uterus. The ovaries have two main functions:
- Release an egg approximately every 28 days as part of the menstrual cycle.
- Release the hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Ovarian cysts are very common in women. In most cases, they cause no symptoms and go away on their own. Ovarian cysts are a sac or pouch filled with fluid or other tissue that develop on or inside the ovaries. Most cysts are benign but in extremely rare cases, they may be cancerous.
Most ovarian cysts form as a result of your menstrual cycle. These are called functional cysts. Functional cysts are usually harmless. They rarely cause pain and often disappear on their own within 2 to 3 menstrual cycles.
There are other types of cysts that are not related to menstrual cycles. This includes:
- Dermoid cyst: Also called a teratoma, these cysts contain tissue, such as hair, skin, or teeth.
- Cystadenoma: This cyst develops on the surface of an ovary. It is filled with a watery or mucous material.
- Endometrioma: These cysts are filled with endometrial tissue.
